I had been invited down a week or so before by the proprietor Noel who is a visitor to this site. The ex-thames lighter LUGSAIL which is now operated as a dumb-tanker barge by MAINMAST LTD was in for survey, some minor repairs and an overall brush up and lick of paint. It had already docked by the time I got there and the gates were still open slightly to let the water drain from the dock. I took a number of images on both film (135) and digital. The 135 ones are to follow. The day they were taken was very hazy indeed. Coupled with the bright sunshine it was almost impossible to the display through the viewfinder and the rear display so I made the most of a bad situation. I used a Circular-Polariser on my lens to cut through some of the haze but to be honest it was pretty bad. When I downloaded the images I was not happy with what I had. So making the best of it I started to play around with CS2 and a plug-in and ended up with these results. What do you think? ]]> Wed Sep 12 2007 THV Patricia http://humbershipping.fotopic.net/c1379786.html This is a gallery of the Trinity House Vessel PATRICIA. She recently paid a visit to Hull Wm. Wright Dock for some repairs. I was lucky enough to see her on the ABP Humber Pavis report and made my way down there to see her as she arrived. As always, I went down to the river with my dad. It was my intention to go down to the Pier to shoot her from there. As it was we parked up on the Victoria Dock estate and got the camera and tripod out. When we reached the riverside we decided to setup nearby "The Deep" as we found a seat that we could sit on whilst waiting for her to arrive. There were a couple of coasters passing by for the upriver wharves - the MONICA and RMS RIGA. Sadly the MFV BILBO BAGGINS was also out from the marine and had a part on board to scatter some ashes out on the Humber. When the THV PATRICIA arrived I was very much in awe of her. Whilst having been built around 30 years ago she has a style of a much older vessel with a Cruiser stern and a funnel like that of a steam ship. I really enjoyed seeing her and I doubt there are many working vessels around of this high quality of construction. Trinity House was granted a charter by Henry VIII in 1514 and is the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar and is responsible for a range of general aids to navigation. The main concern of Trinity House is to ensure the safe passage of shipping by providing and maintaining Aids to Navigation that include lighthouse, light vessels/floats, beacons, radar beacons, buoys and DGPS (differential global positioning system) satellite navigation reference stations. Trinity House is responsible for the annual inspection of Aids to Navigation provided by local port and harbour authorities and also responsible for marking and removing obstructions, such as wrecks which are a danger to navigation. THV Patricia is the Trinity House flagship and her duties include the maintenance of navigational buoys, supplying offshore lighthouses with fuel and dealing with emergencies, including the marking of wrecks. THV Patricia is 86.3m long, with a beam of 13.8m, a draught of 4.45m and speed of 14 knots. She has a helicopter landing deck aft, towing winches that enables the moving of moving light vessels to and from their stations and a 20 tonne speed crane which enables her to lift the largest navigational buoys. The vessels base port is Harwich on the East Coast. While working along the varied coastlines she regularly calls into other ports and harbours. It is while engaged in work along the South Coast that the THV Patricia has called into Southampton. As well has being a working vessel she has six double-bedded cabins which can accommodate up to twelve passengers, making an unusual, but interesting holiday experience. All cabins have en-suite bathrooms, tea/coffee making facilities, satellite television, computer/e-mail links and trouser presses. This is quickly becoming one of my favourite spots for photography. I guess it's because it's a little different to the Humber with the wider variety of shipping to see and different scenery. Each time i've been up here the weather has been very kind to me and i've always come away with a number of cracking shots for my collection. Lapthorns CURLEW visited New Holland Dock and I captured her inwards and outwards. ALTA MAR left King George Dock for New Holland. The Russian River-class AMUR-2540 made for some nice shots as she passed - she had also been at New Holland. The products tanker WILSON SKY also made some nice shots as she headed for Flixborough Fina. On a number of occasions recently I have seen the HOTA (Humberside Offshore Training Association) excercising out on the River Humber. Perhaps my favourite shot of this collection is the one entitled "Local Born". I captured the SWINDERBY and the CURLEW as they passed off the entrance to the River Hull. CURLEW was built by Yorkshire Dry Dock Co. ]]> Thu Sep 6 2007 HMS Bounty departs http://humbershipping.fotopic.net/c1373937.html In difference to when the HMS BOUNTY arrived there was virtually nobody around to see her go. She left Albert Dock around 0930hrs and proceeded out to sea and on to Blyth for her next engagement. Despite there being virtually nobody around to see her go the few people who were around on the Pier spoilt it for me by invading the small amount of space that I had taken up with my camera gear. So much that I had not even enough room to operate my tripod. Where are these buggers when it's raining and all there is to see is the Rix Harrier? Despite this I did manage to get some nice shots of here as she left. Whilst she was leaving I also managed to capture the Russian river-class AMUR-2507 as she made her way into Albert Dock. UTE-S had already passed and I managed a long telephoto shot which I turned to B&W to remove the colour cast. She left Albert Dock around 0930hrs and proceeded out to sea and on to Blyth for her next engagement. Despite there being virtually nobody around to see her go the few people who were around on the Pier spoilt it for me by invading the small amount of space that I had taken up with my camera gear. So much that I had not even enough room to operate my tripod. Where are these buggers when it's raining and all there is to see is the Rix Harrier? Despite this I did manage to get some nice shots of here as she left. Whilst she was leaving I also managed to capture the Russian river-class AMUR-2507 as she made her way into Albert Dock. ]]> Mon Sep 3 2007 River Humber from The Deep http://humbershipping.fotopic.net/c1373927.html The viewing areas around "The Deep" are fast becoming favourites with me for those occasions when I just want to photograph passing coastal trade for the upriver ports and berths. Access to The Deep is very good and much easier to get to than the Pier, even on a pushbike! This is another morning shoot as the ones that precede it. I got down there around 8 and setup my gear and poured myself a drink form my flask :) Lighting was very today giving some of images a colour cast. There was a bright band of orange at the top of my images. This was evident through the viewfinder and could even be seen with the naked eye. It did make a difference to my shots. This is a prime example of the problems of shooting on the River Humber at times. Vessels out and about were the THEA MARIJKE, WARBER, PEWSUM, ANUND, ARCO DIJK, PRIDE OF BRAILA, ALDEBARAN It was interesting for me to see the ANUND still trading under that name. She was one of the earliest vessels that I can remember seeing from when I started this shipspotting hobby back in the mid/late 80s. The ships agents had pressed on to get their vessels penned out early to meet some deadlines for vessel arrivals at europe. So I was able to catch these three where I would not normally have done. The weather this day was awesome with nary a cloud in cobalt blue skies over the Humber. The MS came to King George Dock to offload her cargo of Coal for use in our local powerstations.
