I have posted it here because one of Rix's apprentice's, Matty Finn is a regular visitor to this site and I had promised that I would get some shots of the ' Falcon for him.
The visit to Goole was a little impromptu anyway so I didn't have any time to contact Matty about his sailing schedule.

| These are the old offices of the ELLERMAN-WILSON shipping line.
They were a major shipping line back in the day and finally ceased trading back in 1983 I beleive. Many of there vessels ran the trade routes around the world and from Hull to many European ports.
Some of you will remember such vessels as the BORODINO that ran a liner service from the Riverside Quay here at Albert Dock. Also the SPERO that ran from the old Ro-Ro terminal at Alexandra Dock during the 1960's.
These buildings are now used by the Viking FM and Magic 1161 radio stations as well as being used as a pub/workingmens club and offices.
At the rear of this building is the old Railway Dock that closed in 1968 and re-opened in 1983 as the extension to the Hull Marina. |

| This effect was created with the use of a 300mm Mirror Lens. It was slight defocused to allow the shimmering sun on the shoreline to turn into these doughnut shapes. The shape comes from the mirror in the centre of the lens blocking the light.
Mirror lenes are useful in that they allow a large focal length lens to be effectively folded to that of one around 1/3rd of its size.
My 300mm Mirror lens is around the same length as a 35-70mm zoom lens although it is considerably wider. Mirror lenses are also of a fixed aperture - this one being f5.6. To alter the amount of light entering the lens they are also usually supplied with Neutral Density (ND) or grey filters in 0-Stop 1-Stop and 2-Stop strengths. |

She has since disappeared and I would be interested to know of here current whereabouts. |

| This shot was taken as a test with my new dSLR.
The lens used was a CHINON f1.7 50mm. Stopped down to 1.7 the depth of field is incrediby narrow and allows shots like this to be taken where the water droplets are in sharp focus yet the back ground only 2 inches back is thrown out of focus. This was my itention all along.
The new dSLR has opened up so many other opportunities for me. I am hoping to move into night photography (when I have time) and macro photography (when I have funds enough for the Pentax 100mm macro lens).
If you have a collection of Pentax K-mount equipment already, you could do a lot worse than to invest in an *ist DL or a Samsung GX-1L. Personally i'm loving mine already. |

| They really don't want us around do they? |
|
|
|---|
| That's the feeling that I get.
Apparently it is to stop people from going on the lock gates when they are in operation. If that was so why didn't they put in a small automatic barrier like the one at the Marina?
Funny thing is. Despite so many of us having had our photographic passes revoked for H&S reasosns, there are still some people around who have them because they know the right people. Also there are numerous people still wanderuing around the docks with camera's who go unchallenged by Profile Security.
Talk about one rule for one and one rule for the others. |

| I'm quite please to be able to present this shot to you.
I had set up my gear on the riverfront directly opposit New Holland. It is a distance of at least a mile and possibly a bit further still. The day was overcast and had followed some showers earlier so the air was clear and crisp.
My gear for this shots was my SAMSUNG GX-1L (6.1 MP) dSLR. I used this mounted on a Manfrotto Monopod with a swivel head for stability. The lens was a 300mm K-mount Paraagon with an Ozeck 2x converter. Taking everything into account, the lens focal length amounted to around 900mm. Hence the need for the monopod.
As the lens used is fully manual it doesn't pass any EXIF data to the finished file but I can tell you it was stopped down to f8 to make it a little sharper. The shutter speed was 1/1000 sec so as to lessen camera shake at such an extreme focal length.
What I like about the lens is the fact that it cost me something like £6 at auction. It's not a lens for all though as it has a preset aperture meaning that you have to focus initially and then manually stop down the lens to take a meter reading. It weighs a ton as well being something like 1kg on it's own not counting the camera body.
Was it worth it? You betch. Who else has posted such a close shot of the RMAS Arrochar from that side of the river? |

River Humber and RSQ |
|
|
|---|
| This is the crane barge PANURGIC II (owned by Hughes Marine and skippered by Dean Hughes).
Shot with a late 60's Meyer Orestor 135mm/2.8 lens on a Samsung GX-1L (6.1 MP) camera. I just love this lens to bits.
It is an M42 mount lens fitted with an M42>K adaptor. The lens does not have an automatic aperture and instead relies on a manual (preset) aperture that has be stopped down by hand before shooting. As it is not automatic the makers were able to include substantially more aperture blades than an auto lens (this has 15 blades) and as such the aperture is almost pefectly round at all aperture settings and give really nice out of focus highlights. There are no steps on the aperture between f#'s so it is silky smooth to operate.
Yummy! |

| Nice shot of Kommandor Stuart leaving the lock, just see my car under her bow.The reason she took a turn in the square before entering the lock was to carry out Compass Adjusting, she then proceeded to Riverside Quay for some dockworkers and crew to disembark then she sailed about 15 mins later.I wanted some open water shots of her but was busy berthing the Annuity when she sailed,I tried to get some of her from Riverside Quay as she came out the dock but my camera just kept saying 'Error',ah well.I got a few of her in the dock so will post them to my site at a later date.Speak soon Mick ;-) |

River Humber |

| This was shot over a distance of some 5 miles or so. I was on the riverfront coming up to the old Victoria Dock Basin when the SACURA left King.
For this shot I used my k-mount 300mm f5.6 Paragon Telephoto lens coupled to a Super Ozeck 2x convertor. This was also shot handheld with just a little support from the guard rail along the riverfront.
It's not a perfect shot by any means but knowing the circumstances under which it was taken, it makes it a bit more special. In the near future I shall be looking to replace the old Paragon 300 with a SIGMA 135-400 f2.8, i'm just waiting on the funds right now! |

| I like this shot. I like it a lot.
I do wish that I had waited another second or so and gotten some space between the stern of the tug and the buoy. The original image was a bit of a washout due to the bright lighting combined with the heavy mist that was around.
Using Photoshop v6.00 I turned it black and white with the aid of the channel mixer and it's really given this image a great lease of life.

|---|
| There is a lot of noise on this image which was caused by shooting in the dense fog. The moisture in the air makes it look like film grain from a fast film (iso 1600 ~ 3200).
Whilst this is not intended and not normally tolerated in digital imaging I think it adds to the atmosphere of the final image.
What do you think? |

The lens used for this image was the Tamron Adaptall-2 28mm / f2.5 02B. This is the first time i've used this lens and whilst it's a nice enough lens it suffers badly from flare and looks as though it needs a deep lens hood to combat this. I guess this lens will stay at home whilst the Pentax SMC-M 28/3.5 will continue to be my go-to 28 for the forseable future. Pity though as the extra stop could have been useful. |

Notice the icebreaker bows that she has for navigating those northern waters. The bow does not cut into the ice as the ship does not have enough momentum to do that. Rather it allows the ships bow to ride up on top of the ice and the weight bearing down on it breaks the ice and the hull form then pushe it aside. |

...... White Balance left as shot
...... Exposure, Shadows, Brightness & Contrast adjusted for best possible settings
...... Spotted for sensor dust using Spot Healing Brush
...... Horizon leveled out using grid and image cropped accordingly.
Processed from Two RAW files. One with exposure corrected for the Sky and the other with exposure corrected for the Vessel and the River. Pasted together as two separate layers and then part of the top layer erased to show the show the darker sky. |

| This one was edited in Photoshop Elements v4.0
As shot the tug was brightly coloured but the background was slightly muted. I created a second layer from the image and then turned it to grayscale. Using the eraser I peeled away the top layer to reveal the colour underneath. When i was happy with what I had done I then merged the layers to end up with the final image.
